Stuart Moffatt "On the Hill"
Research Posters on the Hill is an event sponsored by the Office of the Vice-President for Research. Stuart Moffatt was selected to present his work on earthquake loss estimations for the Sugar House Community of Salt Lake City. Using HAZUS-MH, a GIS-based risk assessment tool from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Stuart modeled the economic impact all of the single family residences in Sugar House in the event of an M7.0 event. Both a map and a process poster demonstrate how this first-ever parcel-level earthquake analysis of a Salt Lake community can inform homeowners about seismic upgrade potential through quantifying "mitigation return on investment" as an index of potential savings through both structural and non-structural mitigation.
