Dennison awarded grant to study invasive tamarisk defoliation by leaf beetles

The Utah Cooperative Agriculture Pest Survey Program has awarded Cnth faculty member Phil Dennison a 1 year grant to map tamarisk defoliation near Moab Utah using remote sensing data. Tamarisk, an invasive tree species from central Asia, is found extensively along the Colorado River near Moab. The saltcedar leaf beetle was introduced to control tamarisk over the past several years. The beetle caused total defoliation of tamarisk along the river in summer 2007. Dennison will be using ASTER and MODIS data to map the defoliated area.
