Center receives NSF grant to study decision making in wildfires
(May 2007) - The Center for Natural and Technological Hazards
was recently awarded a three-year grant from the National
Science Foundation for $288,000 to research the factors that affect
protective-action decision making in wildfires. Common protective
actions include evacuation or shelter-in-place, where the focus of this
research will be the criteria and decision making processes that lead
one of these options to be preferable in a given scenario. This project
represents a new partnership between the Geography and Psychology
departments at the U and will be led by Tom Cova, the director of Cnth,
and Frank Drews, an expert in Human Factors widely known for his
research on the cognitive load that cell-phones place on drivers.
